Surprise Birthday Party! Great DIY Projects

I hosted a surprise birthday party for my man this weekend and it was a HUGE success! Here are some of the details I poured my heart and soul into.

The theme was “masculine polka-dots”, if that makes any sense at all. Browns, bright blues, lime greens, and cheery yellows. The dining room table was converted into a sweets table, toped with a lime green table cloth and this fantastic brown polka-dot paper (bought by the yard) from Paper Papier in the Byward Market. I also found the amazing polka-dot cupcake tier there. I baked some chocolate cupcakes and piped on some green and blue icing, toped with silver balls.

I made the cake pops well ahead of time and decided to put blue and green polka-dots on them. They were delicious! I made the cake inside electric blue to match… I may have gone overboard. I picked up the styrofoam and paper (simply a scrapbook page) from Michael’s.The large cupcakes had mini sparklers in them… which triggered off the fire alarms when they were lit…We had a little drink stand with maraschino cherries, grenadine, limes and lemons, and had out matching paper plates, cups, napkins, and utensils (all President’s Choice summer selection purchases).

Of course, what’s a party without great food? I had a huge spread of potato/egg/bacon salad, pasta salad, and Caesar salad, home-made burgers, hot dogs, and every possible condiment and burger topper you could think of. We didn’t even get through a quarter of the food, but that’s okay? We’ll be eating burgers for weeks.

And finally, I bought a helium tank from Party Mart and my girlfriend and I blew up 50 balloons and had them scattered all across the ceiling in the living room. I would highly recommend getting the helium tank for your next event instead of buying them already blown up. It was easy, considerably cheaper, and loads of fun!

We had such an incredible time. What a party! I had loads of fun putting everything together and seeing how happy it made my man to have all of his best friends in one place was amazing. Loads of food, great company, and cake pops for days… I think that’s all a guy can ask for! Happy Birthday Sweetie :) You’re the best.
